Eveready East Africa Ltd (EEAL) has announced the layoff of 26 employees. This is due to the effects of an unfair trading environment as well as cost-cutting measures being undertaken to improve the company’s trading prospects.
EEAL operations continue to suffer from inaction by authorities to control imported zero-rated duty batteries as well as dumping of substandard batteries meant for other regional markets.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has not effectively enforced proper battery valuation mechanisms to block importation of sub-standard batteries while zero-rated batteries continue to find their way into the market despite measures by the Kenya Revenue Authority to reintroduce a 35 percent duty on imported batteries.
EEAL continues to demand a fair trading environment through enforcement of all existing rules relating to importation and standards.
The Government in 2008 reversed its earlier decision to allow batteries from China into the Kenyan market duty-free. The notice denied duty-free access and declared minimum duty values on battery imports from China, but investigations continue to reveal that the batteries from China still gain entry without paying duty.
Eveready EA Ltd is currently streamlining its operations including introducing cost cutting measures to improve the company’s trading prospects.
